The aim of this CU is that student can mobilize knowledge and train skills related to working with older people, local governments and community organizations to develop age-friendly areas.
The student is expected to be able to:
(i) analyze the dynamics of current demographic and family configurations and their impact on social solidarity and interdependence;
(ii) recognize that the living conditions of older people and their families are influenced by local and global policies;
(iii) design a study in the community using data collection methods and procedures that produce reliable and valid gerontological knowledge;
(iv) carry out a diagnosis that highlights the community's strengths and weaknesses, reflecting the views of the various interlocutors;
(v) recognize the ethical principles and values inherent in professional practice and research with older people;
(vi) develop cooperative relationships with various agents and organizations in the community.
The syllabus aims to translate multidisciplinary theoretical knowledge into action projects. It starts by analysing the impact that complex changes in demographic and family structures have on social solidarity and interdependent relationships. These changes translate into challenges and problems to which local communities provide different responses through global and national social policy measures and through local measures and projects. It is clear that local contexts do not provide the same quality and diversity of services or projects, nor do their agents work together in the same partnership or resource-sharing logic. In this sense, the syllabus responds to the need to construct a local diagnosis, using ethical and reliable research procedures that allow the researcher to develop cooperative relationships and reflect the views of the various interlocutors.

Student services take place in Office 3 on Wednesdays (14:00-16:30) and Thursdays (14:00-16:00). The teacher will be able to adjust her timetable to the needs of the student-workers, and appointments must be made in advance by email.
The aim of this curricular unit is for students to have the opportunity to observe and debate problems inherent in practice, translating theoretical knowledge into action programmes that are constantly being improved.
As such, this curricular unit is made up of theoretical and practical seminars based on pedagogical strategies that encourage active learning and the problematisation of experiences observed during internships. In addition to the presentation of content using conventional and multimedia elements, brainstorming techniques will be used to promote debates, group work on actions to be planned and developed during the internship, as well as simulation/role-playing to train skills aimed at dealing with real situations. Research and critical analysis of written and/or audiovisual material (e.g. scientific articles, guidance manuals, documentaries) will also be used in this course.

In accordance with Article 9(2), Chapter II of the Regulations for the Assessment of Knowledge (RAC), the Internship course is compulsory continuous assessment. In continuous assessment courses, students may only miss a maximum of 20 per cent of the total number of classes in each course (article 10.9 of the RAC). The limit on absences for fieldwork is 5% of the total hours planned and 10% of the total hours planned for students covered by the student worker statute (law 116/1997) and the social support for student mothers and fathers statute (law 90/2001).
The assessment of the Internship III course will be the result of the following weightings:
50% - Field work (this will also include the opinion of the internship supervisor regarding the student's performance on the internship).
40% - Written work (internship report), with final oral presentation/defence
10% - Attendance and active participation in classes (record of attendance at seminars)

Considering the curricular unit's defined objectives, the teaching methodologies seek to favour pedagogical conditions that foster the articulation between theoretical knowledge and its operationalisation, corroborating the assumption that student participation in internship contexts is contracted on the basis that they should be active agents of research and action. In this sense, the objectives of this curricular unit presuppose a problematising approach to the theoretical syntheses produced by the various disciplines that underpin gerontology, with special emphasis on the contributions of sociology, demography and social policy that reflect on the impact of current demographic and family configurations on the construction of local and national social policy measures. For this work, the guided discussion of scientific texts, as well as group dynamics of discussion and collective sharing, will be fundamental. At the same time, the construction of local social diagnoses will also be crucial, based on the design of community studies, the stages of which will be monitored in the classroom, given the theoretical and practical nature of this course.Encouraging a participative and critical attitude will contribute to the joint selection of data collection procedures that guarantee the production of reliable and valid gerontological knowledge, based on the ethical principles inherent in professional practice and research with older people. The skills training exercises make it possible to recognise the importance of mediation and establishing cooperative relationships with agents and entities in the community. Whenever it seems appropriate, seminars can be organised to share reports, experiences or community intervention projects presented by professionals working in the field of gerontology.
