Description: The Ethics Committee of the Higher Institute of Social Work of Porto is a collegial body whose mission is to promote reflection and contribute to the definition of guidelines, aiming at the consolidation of a policy of safeguarding ethical and deontological principles in the areas of scientific research, teaching, interaction with society and in the general functioning of the ISSSP.

The Ethics Committee ensures the observance and promotion of ethical quality standards, namely integrity and honesty, as well as deontological principles in the Teaching and Research activity that integrate the ISSSP and its dependent departments, and in the conduct of its members in the respective areas.

The Ethics Committee has the following competences:
a) Analyse issues that raise ethical problems in the context of the actions, responsibilities and relationships, internal and external, of Teaching and Research that make up the ISSSP, as well as the conduct of its members, namely when they concern teaching, research, management, extension activities or other academic activities that may be of general interest to the ISSSP or to academic life;
b) Promote respect for the dignity and integrity of ISSSP activities, paying particular attention to professional codes of ethics, as well as national and international statements and guidelines on ethics;
c) Analyse ethical issues, upon request, from ISSSP Education and Research, without prejudice to producing opinions, recommendations and other documentation on its own initiative;
d) Ensure, within the scope of the institution's operation, compliance with ethical standards, safeguarding the principle of dignity and integrity of the Person;
e) Issue opinions, reports, recommendations and other documents, on its own initiative or at its request, on ethical issues related to the institution's activities, and publicise those it considers particularly relevant in the area of the ethics committee on the institutional website;
f) Prepare reflection documents on issues related to ethics, of general scope, namely with direct interest in the scope of the institution's activity, and disseminate them in the ethics committee area on the institutional website, promoting a culture of training and pedagogy in the sphere of its action, including the dissemination of the general principles of ethics in the institution;
g) Collaborate, at regional, national and international level, with other relevant entities in the field of ethics, with a view to sharing best practices;
h) Promote training on ethics-related issues in their institution;
i) To advise on the preparation of institutional documents that have implications in the field of ethics.
j) Independently assess the methodological, ethical and legal aspects of the research studies submitted to it, as well as issue an opinion on their realisation;
k) Ensure the monitoring of all research studies taking place in the institution from their beginning to their end and the presentation of the final report of the study;
l) Monitoring the conduct of research studies carried out in the respective institution, in particular with regard to ethical aspects and the safety and integrity of participants.
