To provide students with substantive knowledge of the major developments in contemporary societies in order to break with common-sense views on a range of social phenomena:
- Develop the ability to understand and scientifically analyse the genesis of social problems.
- Develop the ability to understand the specific development patterns of Portuguese society as a society of intermediate development
- Develop the ability to observe and interpret socio-cultural diversity within Portuguese society itself
Division of labour, economic dynamics and social integration
1. Basic concepts: economic institutions, work, employment, technical and social division of labour, sectors and branches of economic activity, active/inactive population, activity rate, unemployment rate, occupation and occupational status, qualifications, tertiarisation, social integration
2. Job insecurity.
2.1. Mass unemployment in the "age of globalisation"
2.2 The precariousness of contractual relations
2.3 Metamorphoses of the social question: competitive wage relations; Fordist wage relations; social regression since the last quarter of the 20th century
3. Satisfaction and suffering at work: the evolution of labour systems
3.1 From the workshop labour system to Taylorism/crisis of worker labour
3.2 Toyotism, the organisation of skills and the intensification of the pace of work
The economic transformations that modern societies have witnessed have produced profound social inequalities in terms of access to the job market and have generated social problems such as growing unemployment, job insecurity and new forms of suffering at work. Breaking away from stereotyped views of social reality in this area, particularly those that place the genesis of problems (such as unemployment, for example) in the individual and their characteristics, is fundamental for the Social Worker's intervention. To this end, the syllabus includes a set of concepts and theories whose mastery is fundamental to understanding the genesis of the social problems under study, as well as the particularities of the development of Portuguese society.

Social Phenomena 1 is a theoretical subject. However, the lessons are not merely an exposition of the content, but also include a variety of activities that stimulate learning and go against the logic of merely memorising content: practical exercises to calculate various indicators in order to train reasoning; analysis of the results of calculations made or statistical data in order to identify social phenomena, reading and discussion of texts provided, viewing films/documentaries on the Portuguese reality in terms of economic organisation.

Understanding and scientific analysis of the genesis of social problems closely related to economic transformations, as well as the ability to observe and interpret the socio-cultural diversity of Portuguese society, are not compatible with mere memorisation of content. The use of pedagogical strategies that involve students actively in the learning and knowledge process, through the realisation of diversified practical exercises, is the most appropriate.
