This CU aims to lead students to :
- Reflect on the concepts of normality and mental pathology;
- Know the main diagnostic classification systems for mental disorders;
- Know the main models for understanding psychopathological alterations;
-Acquire general knowledge of descriptive and comprehensive psychopathology, with emphasis on: clinical and diagnostic characteristics, evolution and prognosis.
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Critically reflect on mental pathology, contextualising it in the historical and cultural dimension of the individual;
- Understand and use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders;
- Know how to identify the main signs and symptoms of the most prevalent psychopathological conditions in the adult and elderly population;
- Identify behaviours that facilitate an empathetic attitude and active listening

The teaching of this subject has two distinct components:
1.theoretical (use of expository methodology to teach the fundamental concepts of psychopathology).
2. theoretical-practical (preparation of a clinical case - taking into account the student group's internship context - to be analysed and discussed; inclusion of a proposal for action by social work professionals in the field of mental health.

Continuous assessment
Distributed assessment with several assessment components: (i) oral presentation of group work on a mental disorder selected for the internship context; (ii) written test on the exam date; (iii) attendance and active participation in class.
Each stage of assessment has a specific weighting in the final mark for the course: (i) oral presentation of the work carried out in a group on a mental disorder selected in the context of the internship (50%); (ii) written test (40%); (iii) attendance and active participation in classes considered in the final weighting of the mark (10%) [ Article 11(2) of the Regulations for the Assessment of Knowledge].
Each partial grade must reach a minimum of 6.5 val.
Final exam (100% weighting)
Improvement realised through a final exam (100%).
The teaching methodologies proposed and described integrate a set of innovative teaching practices based on evidence and adjusted to the objectives and contents of the course.
In the theoretical component, expository teaching methodologies will be used. As part of the theoretical-practical component, students will be asked to participate actively, promoting a link between the mental disorder they will be dealing with and the respective academic internship context. The aim is to stimulate practical reflection on ways of acting based on the scientific knowledge that the student will acquire.
